The Waring Way. More than a blender

A Little History

Waring logoNowadays, it’s hard to imagine your commercial kitchen running without a blender.  But before 1937, this must-have appliance didn’t exist. Fred Waring, The founder of Waring Commercial Products, was actually a popular musician and entertainer in the 1930s. He had enough financial backing to also be a promoter and financial investor. An inventor named Frederick Jacob Osius approached Waring about financing an electric blending device he had designed and patented. Soon after, the “Miracle Mixer” was introduced at the National Restaurant Show in 1937, and Fred Waring went on to create the Waring Corporation. He continued to enhance his “Waring Blendor” by adding attachments and creating color-coordinated models. Before the ‘Mad Men’- era of Tiki bar cocktails and tomato aspic, the Waring blender was used to prepare food for patients in hospitals (birthplace of the “smoothee”) and was even used by Dr. Jonas Salk to develop the polio vaccine.Waring ad from the 1950's

By the 1950s, Americans absolutely loved their Waring blenders and hand mixers, and Waring stuck with the times by creating clever print ads and providing recipe books for the happy housewife and savvy cocktail party hostess.

Today, you’ll find two channels – Waring Commercial caters to the professional kitchen, while Waring Pro offers the same quality products but better suited for the home chef.  Kitchen professionals across the globe look to Waring for a wide variety of blenders, drink mixers, immersion blenders, juicers, deep fryers, food processors, Belgian waffle makers and other countertop cooking equipment.

Some of our favorite Waring Commercial Products

Commercial spice grinder
Waring – WSG30 – 1 1/2 C Commercial Spice Grinder

With the rise in popularity of DIY spice blends and in-house concoctions like compound butters came the challenge of processing the right ingredients. In response to current restaurant trends, two spice grinders (WSG30 and WSG60) were introduced as an answer for blending dry, bulky ingredients right on the countertop. These guys easily grind dry spices like cinnamon sticks, peppercorns, and star anise within seconds. The possibilities are endless with these little wonders! I’m thinking a scratch-made spice blend for chai tea. Can you imagine how great that would make your kitchen smell?  Or how about grinding dried chilies for a truly authentic mole sauce?

Waring – WSB25X – Quik Stik Xpress

Chefs are also crazy about Waring’s cordless yet powerful Quik Stik Xpress® immersion blender. The idea that you can move around the kitchen without limits is huge to a rushing prep cook. Immersion blenders bring the obvious to mind – blended soups, sauces, and smoothies – but how about taking it to the sweet side? Pastry chefs grab Waring immersion blenders when they need to temper chocolate, quickly beat eggs into a batter, and even whip cream into beautiful stiff peaks.

Fortunately for all of us, we’ve long moved on from the somewhat sickening recipes of the mid-century American chefs and “Suzie homemakers.” But the fact that Fred Waring was able to see the value in this game-changing product is what Waring Commercial is all about – advancing with the times and truly catering to the modern chef.
