Six signs to look for in a faulty refrigeration unit.
Part of working in the food service industry means developing a deep understanding of the tools and appliances needed to keep your kitchen up and running. Of those appliances, your commercial refrigerator is arguably one of the most important.
With proper maintenance, most high-quality models can last upwards of twenty years, but as time passes, these commercial refrigerators experience some serious wear and tear. And since no restaurant or foodservice establishment can afford to sacrifice food quality, you’ll eventually be required to replace your old commercial fridge with something new.
So, how do you know when your commercial refrigerator’s lifespan is coming to an end?
Here are a few of the tell-tale malfunctions you shouldn’t ignore:
1. Food spoils quicker than usual
2. Energy costs are increasing
Sometimes the problem isn’t only your gaskets. Flaws in the sealing system can result in cold air escaping, worn-out hinges, and damaged panel joints. When cold air escapes from the refrigerator, increased demands are put on the compressor and puts the temperature of your fridge in a state of fluctuation. Ultimately, failure to keep the internal temperatures consistent can tax your system and drive up energy costs.
3. You’re noticing some leakage
There are a number of reasons why your fridge is leaking or building condensation. It may be as simple as replacing the gasket but other issues like the evaporator pan being full or a clog in the drainage hose can be the culprit.
If all of these areas are in good condition, the issue may be your unit as a whole.
4. The refrigerator is hot
The back unit of a refrigerator should be warm to the touch but never hot. The condenser coils determine this temperature and when they’re not kept clean, they push the motor to overcompensate and over-heat.
5. Repair costs are becoming too expensive
6. Your fridge is too loud
The noise from your fridge at home is nothing compared to your commercial refrigerator. Hearing normal refrigerator sounds is no reason to panic, but if you hear noises that are out of the ordinary, you’ll need to take a look at the fan and remove any dirt or debris that may be blocking it and afterward, temporarily shut off the power supply.
Investing in a better, more energy-efficient commercial refrigerator
Replacing your commercial refrigerator may seem like a daunting task. But upgrading sooner rather than later will help you avoid ongoing and costly maintenance issues in the long run.
